One of my favorite books as a kid was the highly controversial (though I didn’t know it at the time) book Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, a series of short horror stories for children. Producer/Director Cody Meirick is bringing the book’s notoriety to the big screen in Scary Stories: A Documentary. According to their website, the documentary will explore the history and background of one of the most challenged children’s books in recent history.
The documentary, partially funded by an Indiegogo campaign, will discuss the history of gothic children’s folklore and illustrations; the publication history of the Scary Stories series and its illustrations; censorship in children’s literature; the origins of the stories from the series, and how author Alvin Schwartz compiled the tales of terror.
I am especially interested to learn where the urban legends and stories came from, and I know I’ll be fond of the nostalgia it will bring.
What do you think? Were you a fan of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark?
