The 15 Best Christmas Horror Movies

15. Don’t Open Till Christmas (1984)

The 80s were ripe with Christmas horror flicks, but this campy British film turns the tables; instead of the killer BEING Santa, the killer is AFTER everyone dressed as Santa.

13. Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010)

A horror fantasy thriller out of Finland, the film follows a group of reindeer herders whose Christmas is disturbed by excavations on a mountain. A scientist has ordered a team of workers to dig open what he calls “the largest burial mound in the world”. Unfortunately the entity in the grave is still alive. Soon after, the reindeer important to the local townspeople are mysteriously killed, and children and supplies begin to disappear. The grave occupant is the source of the original Santa Claus myth; a supernatural being who, rather than giving gifts to good children, punishes the naughty.

It’s Christmas break at the Calvin Finishing School for Girls, and the students are planning a party while the dean is away. A killer begins murdering couples in, you guessed it, a Santa Claus costume. Could the killings have anything to do with the girl who was killed in an initiation hazing at the school years earlier?

7. Home for the Holidays (1972)

This one was pretty impressive for a TV movie, and it has Jessica Walter. Four sisters reluctantly return home to visit their ailing father for Christmas. Their father believes that his wife is trying to poison him, but no one believes him. A storm causes the roads to be flooded and the telephone lines to go down, and it soon becomes clear that someone does want to kill the family. Who is responsible?

6. Gremlins (1984)

A young man gets a gremlin as a pet for Christmas and violates two simple rules: no water on it, and no food after midnight. What was once a cute furry friend becomes a totally destructive monster wreaking havoc everywhere in this horror comedy.

5. Dead of Night (1945)

Widely considered one of the greatest horror anthology films of all time, this one isn’t Christmas-centric but does involve the holiday in part of the film. An architect senses impending doom as his recurring dream turns into reality as he begins to experience deja vous when he is invited to a client’s country home. The guests at the party encourage him to stay as they take turns telling their own supernatural tales. This film is very old and obviously dated, but it’s a horror classic.

3. Krampus (2015)

When his dysfunctional family can’t get along during the holidays, a young boy turns his back on Christmas. The lack of his family’s festive spirit unleashes Krampus: a demonic force sent to punish non-believers. Part horror, part comedy, and tons of fun.

1. Black Christmas (1974)

Before When a Stranger Calls, there was Black Christmas. A sorority house is terrorized by a stranger who makes insanely creepy phone calls and then secretly murders the sorority sisters during Christmas break. One of my favorite horror films.
